Passport meets the Schengen rules
It should be issued within the last 10 years, have at least two blank pages and remain valid for at least three months beyond your planned Schengen departure.
A practical guide for UK residents who need a Portugal Schengen visa — check your consular jurisdiction, prepare the current VFS file and make sure your UK status, itinerary and funds all support the same trip.

A Portugal visa is not required simply because you live in the UK. Your passport decides whether you need a Schengen visa; your UK status determines whether the Portuguese Mission can accept the application here.
British citizens can normally visit Portugal visa-free for tourism and other permitted short stays within the Schengen 90-days-in-180 limit.
If your nationality needs a Schengen visa, UK residence does not remove that requirement. You normally need a valid visa before travelling to Portugal.
Portugal VFS normally expects a valid UK residence permit. A UK C-type visitor visa is only considered for limited essential-travel cases and remains subject to Mission analysis.

Six checks before you book around the trip.
It should be issued within the last 10 years, have at least two blank pages and remain valid for at least three months beyond your planned Schengen departure.
The current VFS checklist accepts physical or digital UK residence evidence and says it should normally remain valid for at least one month beyond your return from Schengen.
Your itinerary should make Portugal the sole or main Schengen destination by purpose or length of stay; otherwise another state may be responsible for the application.
Portugal asks tourist applicants for a personal statement explaining why they are applying and, where available, the purpose and itinerary of the trip.
Current VFS guidance uses €75 for each entry into Schengen plus €40 for each day of the stay as a means-of-subsistence benchmark, supported by suitable financial evidence.
The policy should cover the full Schengen territory and intended stay with at least €30,000 for qualifying medical emergencies and repatriation.
Portugal's UK checklist asks for a clear travel story rather than a loose bundle of bookings. The personal statement, travel plan, residence evidence and finances should all support the same dates and purpose.
Portugal VFS says the Mission can ask for additional information and that original documents should be brought even where photocopies are submitted. Follow the latest category-specific checklist before the appointment.
VFS Global receives Portugal visa applications in the UK, but the correct centre depends on the Portuguese consular jurisdiction for your UK address. The Mission — not VFS — decides the visa.
Use Portugal when it is your sole or main Schengen destination. A multi-country itinerary should still make the responsible state clear.
London-jurisdiction applicants submit in London. Manchester-jurisdiction applicants can submit through Manchester or Edinburgh.
Appointments are in person. Bring the signed form, originals, copies and biometrics where required.
VFS handles administrative intake and passport logistics; it cannot guarantee an approval, validity period or faster decision.
Share the trip basics and we can help organise the application before the official VFS appointment.
What you get from this enquiry
No payment is taken with this enquiry. If you want our help, we confirm the fee with you before any work starts.
Think about three separate parts: finding the right appointment, Mission processing and any transfer time from a satellite centre.
VFS warns that Easter, July–August and Christmas appointments can fill quickly because the Missions process a fixed number of files each day.
The current Portugal VFS UK page states a minimum processing time of two weeks and says no return-date guarantee can be given.
Certain nationalities require Schengen consultation with a minimum of more than three weeks, and Edinburgh submissions should allow two extra transfer days.
A complete file matters. Missing documents, additional Mission requests or an interview can extend the overall journey even when your travel date is close.
The Schengen visa charge and VFS service charge are separate. VFS publishes local service fees in pounds while the visa fee itself is set in euros.
Visa-fee exemptions and special categories exist. GBP equivalents and VFS service charges can change, so check the live Portugal VFS page before paying.
Portugal currently uses VFS Global centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, but these are not interchangeable for every applicant. Your UK address determines whether your file belongs to the London or Manchester consular jurisdiction.
London-jurisdiction residents must use London. Applicants under the Manchester jurisdiction may use Manchester or Edinburgh; Edinburgh files should allow two additional transfer days.
Portugal has a few UK-specific rules that can be missed when applicants rely on a generic Schengen checklist or an appointment-selling website.
London residents and Manchester-jurisdiction residents do not have the same centre choices. Check the live VFS jurisdiction list before paying or travelling to an appointment.
A UK C-type visitor visa is not the normal route for a tourist application. Portugal only considers limited essential-travel cases subject to Mission analysis.
Portugal's tourist checklist asks for a statement explaining why you are applying and how the itinerary fits the purpose of travel.
Your financial evidence should fit both the trip cost and the current €75 entry plus €40-per-day means-of-subsistence benchmark.
Two weeks is a minimum, not a promise. Consultation, extra documents, busy-season demand and Edinburgh transfer time can extend the journey.
Answers to common searches about VFS, UK residence, jurisdiction, Portugal visa requirements, fees, appointments and processing time.
UK residence alone does not decide whether a visa is needed. British passport holders can normally visit Portugal visa-free for permitted short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A UK resident travelling on a passport from a visa-required nationality will normally need a Schengen visa before travel.
Portugal uses VFS Global in the UK. Applicants under the London consular jurisdiction submit in London. Applicants under the Manchester consular jurisdiction can use Manchester or Edinburgh. The correct centre therefore depends on where you live in the UK.
The current Portugal VFS UK guidance normally expects a valid UK residence permit. It says a UK C-type short-stay visa may only be accepted, subject to Mission analysis, for limited essential-travel situations such as business, study, family reunification, health or humanitarian reasons and certain EU-family cases.
If your UK immigration status is digital, the current VFS checklist accepts a digital share code and links applicants to the UKVI service. The residence evidence should normally remain valid for at least one month beyond the return date from the Schengen trip.
The current Portugal VFS UK page states a minimum processing time of two weeks. Certain nationalities require additional consultation and have a minimum processing time of more than three weeks. Extra checks or missing documents can also extend the timeline.
Yes. VFS says applications submitted in its Edinburgh satellite centre should allow two extra days because the file is sent first to the Manchester VFS office and then forwarded to the Portuguese Mission.
The current Portugal VFS UK page lists the standard short-stay visa fee as €90 for adults and a separate VFS service fee of £32.85. The general Schengen reduced fee is €45 for children aged 6 to 11, while children under 6 are generally exempt from the visa fee. Recheck live amounts before payment.
Portugal VFS guidance currently uses a means-of-subsistence benchmark of €75 for each entry into the Schengen Area plus €40 for each day of the stay. Your bank evidence should also fit your overall trip costs and personal circumstances.
A Portugal short-stay Schengen application can normally be submitted up to six months before the intended travel date. Appointment availability can tighten around Easter, summer holidays and Christmas, so starting early is sensible.
