Who actually needs an Austria visa?

The key questions are your passport nationality, whether you are legally resident in the UK, and whether Austria is genuinely responsible for the Schengen trip.

  1. 1

    British passport holder

For tourism and other permitted short visits, British citizens can normally use the Schengen 90-days-in-180 visa-free allowance.

  2. 2

    Visa-required passport

If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, UK residence does not replace that visa. You normally need the visa before travelling.

  3. 3

Resident in the UK, not simply visiting

Austria's VFS UK rules require valid UK residence. A person in the UK on a short-stay C visa is directed to apply from their country of residence instead.

Austria Schengen visa requirementsfor UK residents

Six checks before the VFS appointment.

01

Passport ready for Schengen

It should meet the issue-date, blank-page and post-trip validity rules before you build the rest of the file.

02

Valid UK residence

Your UK residence evidence should show you are entitled to lodge the application here and remain valid for the period Austria requires.

03

Austria is the correct destination

The purpose, length of stay and wider itinerary should make Austria the proper Schengen state to examine the application.

04

Travel and accommodation align

Your transport reservation and accommodation should cover the same dates and route. Austria says a paid flight ticket is not required for this proof.

05

Finances and UK ties make sense

Banking, employment, study, sponsor or family evidence should support the cost of the trip and your circumstances in the UK.

06

Insurance fits Austria's rules

Cover must be valid across Schengen with at least €30,000; Austria also calls for winter-sports cover when travelling between November and April.

Documents for an Austria tourist visa

Austria expects a current, coherent file. VFS says supporting documents should be recent, and the Embassy can request additional evidence where the application needs clarification.

Austria's UK appointment route

Short-stay Visa C applications are lodged through VFS Global, while the Austrian Embassy in London remains the authority that assesses the file. Appointment availability is separate from the Embassy's decision time.

  1. 1
Choose the correct Visa C purpose

Tourism, family visits and business have different supporting-document needs, so start with the category that matches the trip.

  2. 2
    Prepare before you book

Keep the UK residence evidence, transport, accommodation, finances and insurance consistent before attending the centre.

  3. 3
    Attend VFS in person

Submit the application, present the required originals and copies, and provide biometrics where applicable.

  4. 4
    The Embassy decides

VFS receives and returns the application; the Austrian Embassy London continues to assess short-stay visa applications.

Austria visa processing time

Treat appointment availability and Embassy processing as two separate clocks.

Before submissionVFS appointment availability

The Austrian Embassy warns that appointment availability can be limited, so the legal minimum lead time should not be treated as a comfortable booking plan.

≈15days, generally

The Austrian Embassy London says general processing for a visa application is approximately 15 days after a complete, admissible submission.

If more review is neededUp to 45 days under EU rules

The Schengen framework allows the decision period to extend when the file requires more detailed examination or additional documents.

Apply as early as practical, especially around ski season and summer travel. No private service can guarantee a decision date or shorten the Embassy's examination.

Austria visa fees

The Schengen visa fee and the VFS service fee are separate. Austria's UK page converts the visa charge into pounds using the applicable exchange rate, so the GBP amount can move.

Optional VFS services cost extra and do not improve the chance of approval or alter the Embassy's decision process.

Where to submit an Austria visa in the UK

The Austrian Embassy London lists VFS Austria Visa Application Centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh for short-stay submissions. The centres receive the application; the Austrian Embassy London continues to assess it.

Five Austria visa mistakes worth avoiding

Austria's process is straightforward when the file tells one consistent story. These are the areas where applicants can create avoidable problems.

  • 01
Applying from the UK without qualifying residence

A UK visitor visa is not the same as UK residence. Check that you are entitled to lodge the application here before paying for an appointment.

  • 02
Choosing Austria only because a slot is available

The itinerary should make Austria the genuine main destination under the Schengen rules.

  • 03
Buying a non-refundable flight too early

The Embassy accepts a transport reservation or booking and specifically says a paid ticket is not required as proof.

  • 04
    Missing the winter-sports insurance detail

For travel between November and April, Austria's London guidance says the qualifying policy must include winter sports cover.

  • 05
    Using old or contradictory evidence

VFS says supporting documents should be recent. Dates, accommodation, money, employment and the stated purpose should all support the same trip.

Austria visa FAQs

Answers to common searches about VFS, UK residence, Austria visa requirements, winter insurance, fees, appointments and processing time.

Do UK residents need a visa for Austria?

UK residence alone does not decide whether a visa is needed. British passport holders can normally visit Austria visa-free for permitted short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A UK resident travelling on a passport from a visa-required nationality will normally need a Schengen visa before travel.

Where do I apply for an Austria visa from the UK?

Austria has outsourced short-stay Visa C submissions in the UK to VFS Global. The Austrian Embassy in London lists VFS centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, while the Embassy continues to assess the applications.

Can I apply for an Austria visa if I am only visiting the UK?

The VFS Austria UK eligibility rules require a valid UK residence permit. They state that a person in the UK on a short-stay C-type visa should apply from their country of residence instead. Check the current residence-evidence rules for your own status before booking.

How long does an Austria Schengen visa take from the UK?

The Austrian Embassy in London says general processing is approximately 15 days. EU rules allow the examination period to extend to 45 days when a more detailed review or additional documents are needed. Appointment availability is a separate part of the timeline.

How much is an Austria visa from the UK?

The standard short-stay Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, with common exemptions including children under 6. VFS Austria UK currently lists a separate service fee of £28.80 per application. The GBP equivalent of the visa fee can change with the exchange rate.

How early can I apply for an Austria Schengen visa?

Schengen applications can normally be lodged no earlier than six months before the intended trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before travel. Appointment demand means it is sensible to prepare earlier than the legal minimum.

Do I need winter sports cover for an Austria visa?

Austria has a particularly important winter-travel detail. The Austrian Embassy London guidance says that when travelling between November and April, qualifying travel medical insurance must include winter sports cover. The policy must otherwise meet the Schengen-wide insurance requirements and cover at least €30,000.

Do I need to buy my flight before applying for an Austria visa?

The Austrian Embassy London guidance asks for proof of transport but says a reservation or booking is sufficient and that presentation of a paid ticket is not required. Keep the itinerary consistent with your accommodation and the country responsible for the application.

Which country should handle my visa if I visit Austria and other Schengen countries?

Apply to the Schengen country that is your main destination, normally determined by the purpose and length of stay. If Austria is not genuinely the main destination, it should not be chosen simply because a VFS appointment is available.
