British citizens can normally visit Hungary visa-free for permitted stays up to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen period. Longer stays and residence require a different process.

Visa-required nationals should use the UK route only as lawful UK residents. The residence permission must cover the buffer stated by the Hungarian mission, including where status is proved digitally.

Hungary’s VFS route has residence, destination and timing details that a generic Schengen checklist can easily miss.
- 01Treating a UK permit as a visa exemption
A UK eVisa or residence document shows where you live; it does not cancel a Hungarian visa requirement attached to your passport nationality.
- 02Using a UK visitor visa to apply
The Hungarian UK instructions are for residents, not people merely visiting Britain on a short UK C visa. Use the route for your actual country of residence.
- 03Treating the form as a submitted application
Completing a form does not submit the case. Follow the Hungary VFS booking flow, print what is required and take the supporting bundle in person.
- 04Choosing Hungary for appointment convenience
Hungarian authorities must be responsible for the genuine itinerary. Do not reshape bookings around Hungary simply because a convenient appointment appears.
- 05Planning around exactly 15 days
The published decision period is not the whole calendar journey: obtaining a VFS slot, transferring the file and returning the passport add separate time.
