Passport ready for Schengen travel
The travel document needs the required remaining validity and at least two blank visa pages.
A practical guide for UK residents who need an Italian Schengen visa — covering VFS appointments, legal UK residence, core documents, fees and the timeline before submission.
Independent support, not an official visa application. Or use the quick form on this page.

Earliest application pointA short-stay application can normally be lodged up to six months before travel.
UK VFS centresLondon, Manchester and Edinburgh currently receive Italy visa applications.
Calendar daysThe official Schengen processing window can run from 15 to 45 days.
The key question is your passport nationality, not simply the fact that you live in Britain. Your UK status decides where you can submit; your nationality decides whether a Schengen visa is needed.
A full British citizen passport normally allows visa-free visits to Italy for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism and other permitted short stays.
If your passport is subject to the Schengen visa requirement and you are legally resident in the UK, you will normally need an Italy short-stay visa before travel.
Italy should normally be your sole or main Schengen destination. If France or Spain is actually your main destination, use the relevant country guide instead.
For other destinations on your itinerary, see these country guides:
Six checks that shape a complete Italy visa file.
The travel document needs the required remaining validity and at least two blank visa pages.
VFS currently asks for UK residence evidence and, where relevant, a share code that proves your immigration status.
Your itinerary should make Italy the sole or main destination under the Schengen main-destination rules.
Transport, accommodation, trip purpose and dates should describe the same journey from start to finish.
The tourism checklist asks for recent UK bank history and evidence that supports how the trip will be funded.
Travel medical insurance normally needs at least €30,000 of cover for medical costs and repatriation across Schengen.
Italy's tourism checklist is more specific than a generic Schengen list. Build the core file first, then compare every item against the current VFS instructions for your profile.
The Italian Consulate can request extra documents and some nationalities have additional identity-document rules. Treat the live official checklist as the final reference.
VFS Global receives applications in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. The Consulate General of Italy in London handles UK visa services and the decision; the VFS centre is the submission route.
You should be legally resident here. A UK visitor visa is not normally enough to lodge an Italian Schengen application in Britain.
Prepare the signed Schengen form and use the current Italy/VFS checklist for the exact visa category.
Since 19 September 2025, short-stay (C type) Schengen appointments for Italy are booked only through the "Italy Global" mobile app. Choose London, Manchester or Edinburgh in the app.
Applicants appear in person, submit the file and complete biometrics where required. Missing items can mean rebooking.
Send the trip basics and we can help organise your documents before you attend the official VFS appointment.
What you get from this enquiry
No payment is taken with this enquiry. If you want our help, we confirm the fee with you before any work starts.
Separate appointment waiting from the time the application spends with the visa authorities after submission.
VFS slots can fill quickly around Easter, summer and Christmas, so booking time needs its own buffer.
The Italian Consulate and VFS state a minimum Schengen processing period of 15 calendar days.
Further examination or extra documents can extend the process. Manchester and Edinburgh submissions also need extra transfer time to London.
Italy's official guidance says the processing time cannot be rushed. Do not rely on any private service promising a faster consular decision.
The visa fee and the VFS service fee are separate. The visa amount is converted into pounds using the current consular exchange rate.
Reduced or waived fees apply to some categories. Confirm the current GBP amount and VFS charge before payment because exchange rates and service fees can change.
VFS Global currently accepts Italy visa applications in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. All UK visa services are handled by the Consulate General of Italy in London.
VFS states that applications submitted in Manchester and Edinburgh should allow two extra working days for transfer through London before reaching the Mission.
Italy's checklist is detailed. The biggest problems are usually not exotic — they are gaps between your status, itinerary and supporting evidence.
Applicants should be legally resident in Britain; a short UK visitor visa is not the normal route for lodging here.
VFS asks for proof of immigration status. A right-to-work code is not a substitute for the status evidence requested for the visa file.
If another Schengen country is actually the main destination, Italy may not be the correct place to apply.
Italian guidance repeatedly asks for printed originals and photocopies where specified. An incomplete file can mean a new appointment.
Appointment delays, extra checks and the transfer from Manchester or Edinburgh can all make the total journey longer.
Clear answers to common questions about VFS appointments, UK residence, documents, fees and processing for an Italian Schengen visa.
UK residence alone does not decide whether you need a visa. British citizens can normally visit Italy and the wider Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for permitted short stays. A UK resident whose passport nationality is visa-required will normally need a short-stay Schengen visa before travelling.
Italy uses VFS Global for visa submissions in the UK. Current VFS centres are in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, while visa services and decisions are handled by the Consulate General of Italy in London.
The Italian Consulate and VFS instructions require applicants to be legally resident in the UK. A person in the UK only on a short-stay C visitor visa is not normally eligible to lodge the Italy Schengen visa application here and should apply from the country of residence.
Yes. VFS London asks for your UK residence permit, valid at least three months beyond your return from Italy, plus a valid share code proving your immigration status from GOV.UK. A right-to-work share code is not accepted for visa purposes.
The official minimum processing period is 15 calendar days and a Schengen application can take up to 45 days depending on nationality, documents and further checks. Applications submitted in Manchester or Edinburgh should also allow extra transfer time to London.
A short-stay application can normally be submitted up to six months before the intended trip and should not be lodged later than 15 calendar days before travel. Appointment availability is separate, so applying early is sensible during busy periods.
The standard Schengen short-stay fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to under 12. VFS London currently lists these as £77.20 and £38.60, plus a separate VFS service fee of £13.00 per application. Amounts in pounds follow the exchange rate and can change.
Yes. The current Italian Consulate instructions include additional identity evidence for certain nationalities and travel-document holders. Always check the live VFS and Italian Consulate checklist for your nationality and visa category before the appointment.
