Malta’s UK route requires two separate checks: the passport determines visa need, and qualifying UK residence determines whether the applicant can lodge through Malta VFS in Britain.
British citizens can normally visit Malta visa-free for permitted stays up to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen period. Longer stays and residence require a different process.
A visa-required national should use the UK centres only with lawful UK residence that remains valid for Malta’s required period beyond the Schengen return date.
Use Malta when it is your only or main destination. For equal stays, apply to the country whose external border you cross first; appointment availability does not change competence.

The published decision period is not the full journey: the UK route separately involves slot availability, transfer and passport return.
