Your passport meets the Schengen rules
Use a passport issued within the last 10 years, with the required blank pages and validity extending at least three months beyond the planned Schengen departure.
Sweden uses a different UK workflow from many Schengen states: upload the file through the VFS e-application first, let the documents be reviewed, then complete biometrics or passport submission before the case is sent to the Swedish Migration Agency.

The passport, your UK residence and the real main destination matter before the document upload begins.
British citizens can normally visit Sweden visa-free for permitted short stays. Many other UK residents still need a Schengen visa because of the passport they travel on.
VFS normally expects UK residence evidence that remains valid for at least one month beyond your return from Schengen. A short UK visit is not the normal basis for applying here.
If the itinerary covers several Schengen states, the nights, purpose and overall travel plan should support Sweden as the country responsible for the application.
For other destinations on your itinerary, see these country guides:
Six checks before the VFS e-application is finalised.
Use a passport issued within the last 10 years, with the required blank pages and validity extending at least three months beyond the planned Schengen departure.
The current VFS checklist says UK residence evidence should remain valid for at least one month beyond your return date from the Schengen Area.
Sweden's UK process starts with digital document upload. VFS reviews the uploaded evidence and can request corrections before the final application form is generated.
Current VFS guidance asks for the latest three months of UK current-account statements and a minimum balance benchmark of £40 per day plus unpaid accommodation and travel costs.
Flights or travel plans, accommodation, occupation evidence and the purpose of the visit should point to the same dates and a credible reason to return to the UK.
Travel medical insurance must cover the full Schengen territory for the intended stay, including at least €30,000 for medical emergency and repatriation.
The Sweden UK file is built online before the passport stage. Documents should be recent, internally consistent and uploaded clearly enough for VFS to complete its initial review.
VFS states that standard and supporting documents should be recent and that the Swedish Migration Agency can request further evidence or an interview. Build the file from the current category checklist rather than a generic Schengen list.
The most important difference is that the document check happens online before the normal appointment or passport handover stage.
Start through the official VFS Sweden e-application portal and upload the evidence required for your visa category.
A submission officer checks the uploaded documents for completeness and can request more information or corrected evidence through the portal.
Once the documents are accepted, download the system-generated form, sign it and upload it back to the portal.
Book VFS if biometrics are required. If reusable Schengen biometrics were recorded within the last 59 months, the portal may instead offer mail-in or drop-off passport submission.
Share the trip basics and we can help organise the evidence before you finalise the official VFS e-application.
What you get from this enquiry
No payment is taken with this enquiry. If you want our help, we confirm the fee with you before any work starts.
Do not count only from the day you upload documents. Sweden's published handling time starts after the Swedish Migration Agency physically receives the application and passport.
VFS checks the uploaded file, the application form is generated, and the passport or biometrics stage is completed before dispatch to Sweden.
Sweden Abroad states around 15 calendar days from receipt by the Swedish Migration Agency, with complex or incomplete cases extendable to 45 days.
Official Sweden Abroad guidance says normal one-way transport is about two days from London and three days from Edinburgh.
VFS also warns that international shipping can take several working days each way and that peak-season document review may take longer. Apply well before the minimum 15-day rule.
The Schengen visa fee and VFS service fee are separate. Sterling amounts can move with exchange rates, so the live VFS payment screen is the final amount to rely on.
The dedicated VFS fee PDF currently lists €27, while some legacy text on the VFS page still shows €20. Confirm the amount displayed by the official portal before payment. Visa and service fees are generally non-refundable once the relevant processing stage has started.
The official Sweden Abroad UK guidance currently points Schengen applicants to VFS Global in London or Edinburgh. The application is then sent to the Swedish Migration Agency in Sweden for the decision.
Sweden Abroad lists normal one-way passport transport of about two days from London and three days from Edinburgh.
Sweden's digital-first UK process creates a different set of avoidable problems from a standard paper-first Schengen application.
The Embassy in London no longer handles Schengen applications. VFS Global is Sweden's authorised external provider for the UK process.
VFS reviews the digital evidence first. Missing, unclear or inconsistent documents can trigger requests before the application form is generated.
The current checklist expects residence evidence valid at least one month beyond the return date. A normal UK C-type visitor stay is not the standard application basis.
The £40-per-day benchmark is not the whole calculation; the current VFS wording also adds outstanding accommodation and travel costs.
The Swedish Migration Agency's handling time begins after physical receipt, so document review and passport transport must be planned separately.
Answers to common searches about the VFS e-application, UK residence, Sweden visa documents, funds, fees, appointments and processing time.
UK residence by itself does not decide this. British passport holders can normally visit Sweden visa-free for permitted short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. UK residents travelling on passports from visa-required countries normally need a Schengen visa before travel.
Sweden uses VFS Global for UK Schengen applications. The official Sweden Abroad guidance currently points applicants to VFS centres in London and Edinburgh. The Embassy of Sweden in London no longer handles Schengen visa applications.
Yes. The current VFS Sweden UK process uses an e-application portal. You upload the supporting documents first, VFS reviews them, and once the documents are accepted the system generates the application form for signature and re-upload before the appointment or passport-submission stage.
The current VFS process says applicants whose Schengen biometrics were recorded within the previous 59 months may be offered the option to mail or drop off the passport after the online document stage. Minors must attend with both parents and postal submission is not accepted for them.
The normal UK route requires evidence of UK residence valid for at least one month beyond your return from the Schengen trip. VFS lists only a narrow exception for some C-type UK visitors who have already been outside their normal country of residence and have lived continuously in the UK for more than six months.
The current Sweden VFS UK checklist says the latest three months of UK current-account statements should show at least £40 per day of the Schengen stay, plus any outstanding accommodation and travel costs. The file should still make sense against your actual trip length and circumstances.
Sweden Abroad says the normal handling time is around 15 calendar days from when the Swedish Migration Agency receives both the application and passport. It can extend to 45 days if the file is incomplete or needs an interview, verification or further examination. Passport transport time is additional.
Allow extra transport time. Sweden Abroad states normal passport transport is about two days one way from London and three days from Edinburgh. The VFS UK page also advises Edinburgh applicants to add extra time because the passport moves through London before being sent to Sweden.
The standard Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–11, with children under 6 exempt from the visa fee. VFS charges a separate service fee. Its current dedicated fee PDF lists €27, although some older text on the VFS page still shows €20, so confirm the amount shown at payment.
VFS says a Sweden Schengen application can normally be started up to six months before travel. Sweden Abroad also stresses that the application and passport should reach the Swedish Migration Agency at least 15 days before the planned visit, so leave room for document review and courier time.
